Sail Along with us from California to New Zealand & All thru the SOUTH PACIFIC ;-)
This is a Slide Show Video of still pictures highlighting our
actual Sailing experiences
underway among the Jewels of the Pacific...Seriously Livin' da Dream!
All those years of playing my guitar in the cockpit while blissfully anchored in the most remote & beautiful places I've ever experience before or since...
Is finding a big influence in my solo acoustic Guitar style.
These are live recordings of compositions that I compose live ;-)
For the Techy Types:
I play an Ovation 2080SR - a carbon & graphite guitar
I record the bridge pickup, a purpose made acoustic guitar mic near the tear drop sound hole & a nice large diaphram condenser mic pointed at the sweet spot about 1.5 feet away.
I',m using a PreSonus Blue Tube Mic & Instrument Pre amp,
an ART Tube/Opto Compressor.
I record at 24bit 96k, within my Digital Audio Workstation these files are processed & mixed at 32bit floating @ 96k.
A direct conversion is made during the video rendering process to achieve the finest quality possible....
...ok, if I had the $20,000 Golden Signal Path...
it may soune just a wee bit better
Operators are standing by for donations to my
'Golden Signal Path' fund ;-)
Stand by for these phenomenal recordings once the funds rush in :-O
We have settled on Maui to bring the

More About Our Mexico Sailing Adventures
This was a dream spanning 30 years & here you can see the final motor preps before we loaded up our toys & sailed WAAAAY on down da beach ta MEXICO ;-0
We do encounter the dire need to have our
$$ custom fuel tank touched up in Mexico :-O
AAaaannnnnnDhgh! a new ROLLER furling JIBarooo or yea aaaaannnnd a newish GENAKAR....the big party balloon sail....
yup we had one ;-)
The Sea of Cortez is brutally dry & waterless; the only chance for a town depends greatly on it's water supply.
We encountered the 'midden' remains of 400 to 800 years ago, shells discarded & piled up outside of cave dewelings...still in place after centuries.
We saw the petroglyph painting on rocks from the ancients
found petrified sea shells high on a high cliff,
embedded in the layers of 'YesterYear' :-O
All this amazing adventure &
all less than a 1000 miles from San Diego ;-)
...yet it felt like a world away...certainly a nerve wracking 24 hour high speed bus ride on a broken down thin two lane 'highway' up da peninsula...so I'm told...
I got to stay a month in Santa Rosalita while Bobbie Jo & Robin took that daring jaunt up state's side.
Memories of the fabled 'Bacon wrapped Hot Dogg' in
Santa Rosalia still give me cravings...
I think the month of mountain biking those extremely rugged hills had a lot to do with my frame breaking here on Maui a few years later :-O
More about How I Recorded the Soundtrack Live
I play a carbon/graphite Ovation 2080SR with the bridge pickup & built in balanced direct output guitar pre-amp Featuring the Virtual Imaging Processor...it has computer modeling to give the sound a good mic in a studio would sound...instead of the pizio bridge pickup sound...
Yea yea that's sort of cool...
but the real sounds come from using a large condenser mic about 15" away
and my K&K guitar mic or another cool mic right on sound hole.
I plug all this into a Presonus Blue Tube Mic pre amps & the ART Tube Opto Compressor...I used to have Neve Mic pre amps & ADL tube compressors....
but for 1000's less it sounds darn close.
I record at 24bit 96k sample rate into a 32bit floating Protools session, the processing & plugins then render the file giving amazing increase of headroom .
D-Wahine is a major 7th sound, a happy sound,
a love sound...thus Wahine, the Polynesian word for woman of which we speak of love & reverence....
er that's how da story goez...
I picked out these happy major 7th notes &
created my own scales...
the Blue Notes...for dat rollin' in da gutta Blues Stuff...
Two wayz 2 go...perky up lifting major 7th-ish stuff....
or Blues stuff....
I just 'make it up as I go along'....MIUAIGA

More about Sailing in Fiji
Sailing over 20,000 miles was very cool but nothing compares to the experiences of sailing to some of Fiji's most remote islands where the tourist just don't go & the locals can live their lives without ever even seeing a pale foreigner.
When one reads about Captain Cook's adventures, upon engaging islanders for the first time, the islanders could not believe their eyes at the site of the pale 'apparitions' the ghost like pale people appeared to be ...not of this world...
They would poke & touch with the utmost curiosity....
Wondering with full amazement of what they are seeing...
We happened to experience this same ourselves while visiting some islands that are way far & beyond the normal path of tourists...
The little children there had never seen the ghostly appearances of us pale folks.
They sat in the front row of thel villagers assembled for our impromptu concert & as customary...the bottomless kava bowl ;-)
The kids stared at us with eyes Way Wide open...for hours....they'd cautiously poke & touch our skin as if seeing if we were real :-O
Yes, there are places left in the world where people live a simple un-complex life among family & friends...just as they have been for millennia...
....of course cannibalism was the way just up to the last century....
but besides that...it was idyllic ;-)
We didn't get to tast the 'long pig' but did have an honorary porky pig roast & heaps of kava....in so many ways, it was awesome to experience life in Bulla Bulla Ville ;-)
Cannibalism aside...the people of Fiji were the friendliest people in the world, certainly of all our travels. Just to meet a perfect stranger on the street, they would treat us like their new best friend!
Go to Fiji & greet your new best friends with a hearty "Bula Bula" !! ;-)

Chaced on a Stormy Passage - Mr. Hipnautical
Take a very exciting visual sailing experience
from tranquil anchorages, calm mesmorizing underwater views to
Riding the storm out with HUGE following seas :-O
The Inspiration for the Sound Track Arrangements
Chased on a stormy passage
I wrote the first part of this instrumental song while working at
Chace Productions - Full Feature Films, TV & Cable Productions
Somewhere in the south pacific after a particularly stormy passage & wrote the rest while at anchor in a very tranquil but quite remote bay.
Throughout the nearly 8 years I owned my sailboat, I spent many magical moments among the marine scenes while anchored in far away tropical spenders, blissfully 'at one' with my guitar & these wondrous surroundings.
These 'spiritual like' connections are an inspiration that I recall to help guide my musical meanderings.
To just 'be there' in the moment of that 'one particular place'
I can visualize how the place looked, but more importantly
how it felt to be there fully at one with the natural way of things there
After completing my sailing adventures, I am compelled to
put into guitar instrumental music a vibe that takes me back to those
far and remote places...
feeling the natural slow flow of things in that manner.
Chaced on a Stormy Passage - Video Explained!
The opening shot is our sailboat 'Hipnautical' anchored in a
very remote sunken coral reef - Minerva Reef ...
is a few hundred miles SW of Tonga
We stopped here on our way down to New Zealand
The other worldly blood red sunset sky was right on par
to match the intensity of the strangeness of being anchored at a reef
in the middle of a long ocean passage...
at high tide there is hardly any reef to be seen
giving the feeling that you truly anchored in the middle of the ocean
The next shot 'IS the calm before the storm'
at this point we are enjoying a nice calm sunset
by midnight we were rollin' with a big storm
Sailing throughout the Tuamotu island group of atolls
were really a thing of what sailor's dreams are made of
After sailing for days to get to these tiny specks of land
one really get the sense of how remote these places really are
An atoll is not even an island, it used to be an island encircled by a coral reef
when the island was present, fresh water run offs would keep the coral from growing in those areas. Later when the island had submerged, these breaks in the original coral atoll are the only way into the atoll from the high seas.
These passes, are now home to endless acres of multi colored coral species that have been thriving here for millions of years
Also thriving here is the countless shark species that make their rounds in & out of the pass patrolling for weak, injured or dead sea life...
or the unsuspecting snorkeler :-O
My guitar goes thru an up beat mode that takes us
down below the surface to enjoy a calm serene scene
just days before the storm is to arrive...but for now it's all good ;-)
The cute fishes & vibrantly rich multi colored coral reef views are stunning.
As the time draws closer to our 'assumed' departure date, a building system is approaching our area, promising some challenging conditions
Although we sailed into the atoll in calm dreamy seas
the seas that are coming our way are nightmarish
On the day we 'were' to have departed, we opted to stay until
calmer conditions return; on this day we went on shore to view the high seas. Here you see a picture of our brave son Robin
He never once spoke of any fears of our up coming passages
there is quite a bit of bravery in this kid's unspoken ways
I pondered as we both watched in awe the mighty power of the high seas &
the relentless torrent of wind & the endless train of on coming waves...
knowing that soon we will be sailing those seas again & again & ...
I had a birthday there while 'riding the storm out...
a few days later we were back to fairly regular trade wind conditions
as we made our way out of the pass.
To be careful, one should not enter or depart a pass unless it's at or near slack tide. The waters that rush into or out of a nearly enclosed atoll can amazing effects of the water causing huge waves & odd whirlpools, currents & eddies.
This particular pass did not have narrow threating coral walls...
the threating coral walls were widely spaced as coral passes go so
we chose to just power right on out
despite the harrowing tidal waves we encountered.
